The project at Winchelsea Road is a perfect example of a problematic back-land parcel, prime for residential use. Haringey Council approached Pinchin Architects to explore proposals on the site at the end of a row of terrace housing.

The simple approach would have been to try to replicate one of the existing terrace houses so that it tied to the existing row of houses; however, the site's constraints did not allow for this. The neighbouring property had a single-storey side extension which sat in line with the principle elevation, meaning that any proposal could not follow the existing street pattern.

Instead, a unique house was proposed that used as many of the basic principles of the street scene as possible. The use of modern materials such as zinc shingles was proposed as a roof and cladding material on the elevations to allow the unusual roof form to become a striking feature of the scheme. The base is proposed in masonry to allow a robust material in an area where continuous traffic would pass. The house is a 2-bed 4-person property and includes generous living accommodation.
